Univision Delivers Year-Over-Year Primetime Audience Growth Among Adults 18-49 as Big Four English-Language Broadcast Networks Report Declines During July 2019 Sweeps

Univision Averages More Young Adults 18-34 in Primetime than CBS, FOX and The CW; Becomes Most-Watched Spanish-Language Network during the July Sweep for the 26th Time with Total Viewers 2+ and Adults 18-34

KMEX Ends July Sweeps as the No. 1 Station in Los Angeles Among Key Demos, Regardless of Language

MIAMI – AUGUST 1, 2019 – Univision Communications Inc., the leading Hispanic media company in the U.S., has wrapped the July 2019 sweep as the lone network against ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC  to deliver year-over-year audience growth in primetime with Adults 18-49 (+8%). Similarly, Univision increased its primetime audience year-over-year among Adults 18-34 (+18%), while CBS, NBC, and FOX sustained audience declines. With a median age of 45, Univision ends the July 2019 sweep as the youngest broadcast network in primetime, attracting an audience that is 15 years younger than the average viewer of the big four English-language broadcast networks.

Led by a July slate featuring exciting live sports and music events, Univision outperformed CBS, FOX, The CW, and Telemundo during primetime and out-delivered one or more of the English-language broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, NBC or FOX) on six out of every seven nights with the coveted Adults 18-34 audience. Univision also out-delivered one of the big four on three out of every seven nights among Adults 18-49.

Overall, Univision averaged the highest audience concentration of millennials and Adults 18-49 compared to all English-language broadcast networks in primetime. Univision’s performance with millennials was driven by “La Reina Soy Yo,” “La Rosa De Guadalupe” and “Por Amar Sin Ley,” which delivered more Adult 18-34 viewers than first-run episodes of:

  • ABC’s “Family Food Fight,” “Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” and “Reef Break;”
  • CBS’ “Blood & Treasure,” “Elementary,” “Instinct,” “Million Dollar Mile,” “The Code” and “The Good Fight”
  • NBC’s “The InBetween”
  • FOX’s “So You Think You Can Dance” and “What Just Happened??! with Fred Savage”
  • The CW’s “Big Stage,” “Burden of Truth,” and “Jane the Virgin”

Additionally, these series averaged more Adult 18-49 viewers than first-run episodes of such English-language dramas as ABC’s “Reef Break;” CBS’ “Blood & Treasure,” “Instinct” and “The Good Fight;” and The CW’s “Burden of Truth,” “iZombie,” “Jane the Virgin,” “Pandora,” “The Hundred” and “The Outpost.”

Univision finished the July 2019 sweep as the top-rated Spanish-language network during primetime for the 26th time, outperforming Telemundo among Total Viewers 2+ and Adults 18-34. During the July 2019 sweep Univision averaged 1.2 million Total Viewers 2+, 501,000 Adults 18-49 and 221,000 Adults 18-34 in primetime. Univision ranks as the No. 1 network, regardless of language, during primetime with Hispanics among Total Viewers 2+ and Adults 18-34 as well as Bilinguals in the key demographics of Total Viewers 2+, Adults 18-49 and Adults 18-34. The July sweep success was also propelled by the strong weekend primetime programming as Univision delivered double-digit audience advantages over Telemundo across Total Viewers 2+ (+75% advantage), Adults 18-49 (+89% advantage) and Adults 18-34 (+81% advantage).

ADDITIONAL HIGHLIGHTS

  • For the 27th consecutive July Sweeps, Univision’s weeknight evening newscast, “Noticiero Univision” is set to finish July 2019 Sweeps as the No. 1 evening news program on broadcast television with more Hispanic viewers than the combined audience of “ABC World News Tonight,” “CBS Evening News” and “NBC Nightly News” among Total Viewers 2+ (+40% advantage), Adults 18-49 (+89% advantage) and Adults 18-34 (+147% advantage). “Noticiero Univision” is also outperforming “Noticias Telemundo” with double-digit audience advantages among Total Viewers 2+ (+37% advantage), Adults 18-49 (+34% advantage) and Adults 18-34 (+36% advantage).
  • Broadcast live on Thursday, July 18, 2019, from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. ET/PT, the 16th annual edition of “Premios Juventud” reached 6.1 million Total Viewers 2+ and positioned Univision as the No. 1 network for the entire night, outperforming ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, The CW, Telemundo and all cable networks among Adults 18-49 and Adults 18-34. The telecast averaged 1.9 million Total Viewers 2+, 923,000 Adults 18-49 and 457,000 Adults 18-34, making it the No. 1 and No. 2 program on all of television with the respective 18 to 34 and 18 to 49 demographics.
  • Broadcast live on Sunday, July 7, 2019 from 9:06 p.m. to 11:15 p.m. ET, Univision’s Mexico-U.S. Gold Cup final averaged 5.9 million Total Viewers 2+ and 3.3 million Adults 18-49, becoming the most-watched men’s soccer match of 2019 on any network, and outperformed last year’s men’s France-Croatia World Cup Final (7/15/18) on Telemundo. The Mexico vs U.S. final ranked as the No. 1 program on Sunday night and for the entire week during primetime among Adults 18-49 and Adults 18-34. Also delivered the No. 1 soccer match on Spanish-language TV for the entire year, outperforming the Copa America and Women’s World Cup Spanish-language finals telecasts combined on Telemundo, respectfully.
  • UniMás reported year-over-year audience growth among both Adults 18-34 and Adults 18-49 in primetime versus audience declines for the major broadcast networks:
    • Adults 18-49: UniMás (+15%) versus declines for ABC (-1%), CBS (-27%), NBC (-22%), FOX (-20%), The CW (-22%) and Telemundo (-12%).
    • Adults 18-34: UniMás (+7%) versus declines for CBS (-24%), NBC (-19%), FOX (-24%), The CW (-21%) and Telemundo (-22%).
  • Univision’s portfolio of networks, including UniMás, Galavision, and TUDN, delivered a 60 percent audience share in primetime over the major Spanish-language competitors among Adults 18-49.
  • Univision Networks delivering 56 of the top 100 programs among Hispanic Adults 18-49, the most of any network, regardless of language.
  • Univision Networks delivering 57 of the top 100 programs among Bilingual Hispanic Adults 18-49, the most of any network, regardless of language.

LOCAL HIGHLIGHTS

KMEX Univision 34 was the unquestioned leader in Los Angeles, where the station closed the July sweep ranked No. 1 in primetime among Total Viewers 2+, Adults 18-49, Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-34, regardless of language. The performance marks the 21st consecutive July sweep that KMEX has finished No. 1 in primetime among Adults 18-49. Along with its primetime win, the station also finished the period No. 1 in total day and early news, while delivering the No. 2 late local news among Adults 18-34, Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54. KMEX’s midday news ended the sweep ranked second overall among Adults 18-49. For the period, KMEX delivered more Total Viewers 2+ in total day than CBS, NBC, FOX, and The CW.

In Houston, KXLN Univision 45 delivered more Adults 18-34 during primetime and more Adults 18-49 and Adults 18-34 in total day viewing than all other stations in the market. The station also finished a close second in prime among Adults 18-49. Meanwhile, KXLN’s early and midday newscasts ranked No. 1 with Adults 18-34 and ranked second among Adults 18-49, Adults 18-34 and Adults 25-54 during late news.

KUVN Univision 23 Dallas delivered the No. 1 ranking among the coveted Adults 18-34 demo for its early and midday news, while also securing the No. 2 position in the demo during late news. Overall, KUVN finished the sweep as the second most-watched station among Adults 18-34 in total day and prime viewing. KUVN’s early and midday news finished second among Adults 18-49.

WLTV Univision 23 Miami finished No. 2 in both primetime and total day among Adults 18-49. The station also saw success across its newscasts, where it delivered the second most-watched early news among Total Viewers 2+, Adults 18-49, Adults 18-34 and Adults 25-54, while also delivering the No. 2 ranking in late news with Total Viewers 2+ and Adults 18-34. During midday news, WLTV ended the sweep second among Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54.

WXTV Univision 41 New York was No. 2 in early local news among Adults 18-34 and Adults 18-49, defeating CBS, NBC, FOX, and The CW. The station also saw success during its midday news with Young Adults 18-34, where WXTV delivered more viewers in the demo than CBS and NBC.

Chicago’s WGBO Univision 66 concluded the July sweep as the No. 2 broadcast station in primetime among Adults 18-34.  The station’s late news delivered more Adults 18-49 than CBS, NBC, FOX, and WGN to end the period ranked No. 2 in viewership for the demo. Additionally, the station’s late news finished No. 1 among Adults 18-34.
