Sporting trim, blue hair, J Balvin picked up the artist of the year award at the 2016 Premios lo Nuestro, held Feb. 18 at the AmericanAirlines Arena in Miami.

“Think out of the box,” exhorted a visibly emotional Balvin when he collected his award. It was one of many emotional moments.

Regional Mexican singer Paquita la del Barrio, known for her man-bashing songs, received special honors and wept unabashedly during her performance and while accepting her award.

In a homage to legendary Colombian singer Carlos Vives, a cadre of Colombian music stars (including Balvin, Juanes, Fonseca and Maluma) as well as soccer players (Including Pibe Valderrama) assembled on stage. Vives received his award from 2014 Miss Universe Paulina Vega, who is also Colombian.

Other highlights of the evening included the much publicized reunion of Mexican duoSin Bandera, and, in a weird déjà vu, Pitbull reprised his Grammy performance of just a few nights ago, performing “El Taxi” (sans Sofia Vergara) and “Bad Man” with Joe Perry, Travis Barker and Robin Thicke (albeit this time with no credits rolling during the song).

The awards aired live on the Univision Network.
