RCN — a competitive cable operator with a sizable footprint in big urban markets such as New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston and Washington, D.C. — has opened Univision Communications’s UVideos TV everywhere platform to its subscribers.
RCN subscribers can now use their logins to access the authenticated site, which offers programming from networks Univision, UniMás and Galavisión, as well as a live stream of the Univision network.
According to Nielsen data cited by RCN, more than one-third of Spanish-speaking Hispanic consumers say the ability to consume content on multiple devices is a highly important factor in choosing a video provider. The Nielsen study also found that six in 10 Spanish-speaking Hispanics were likely to share clips with friends online and expressed an interest in additional Spanish-language digital video content.
“These findings, coupled with Univision Communications’s strategy of making their content available anywhere, anytime and across platforms, reinforced RCN’s decision to add the Univision, UniMás and Galavisión networks to its lineup,” RCN said in a press release.
“The Univision, UniMás and Galavisión networks are important additions to our offerings, as our Spanish-speaking customer base continues to grow, along with the demand for TV Everywhere,” said RCN chief operating officer Chris Fenger. “What’s more, research from ThePlatform shows that more than 90% of pay TV subscribers have the ability to access premium content on their video-enabled, Internet-connected device of choice. That same study also states that the number of video-enabled devices connected to the Internet is expected to eclipse the global population by 2017. As the demand for this service continues to grow, we continue to expand our offerings to keep pace.”
