Sports Ilustrated: Univision lands Spanish TV rights for Euro 2020, UEFA Nations League

Jan 11, 2016

After Euro 2016, the Spanish TV broadcasts for UEFA’s premier international competitions will be moving to Univision Deportes.

The network has agreed to a deal with UEFA for the exclusive Spanish language TV rights to the confederation’s tournaments, and it marks the first time the European Championship will have its games aired on Spanish-speaking broadcast TV in the United States. Cable network ESPN maintains the rights to Euro 2016 and will air matches in Spanish on ESPN Deportes this summer.

The deal includes Euro 2020 and the first UEFA Nations League (which also serves partly as qualifying for Euro 2020) and Nations League Final Four in addition to the Euro 2020 and 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches. Games will be aired on Univision, Univision Deportes, UniMas and Galavision in addition to being streamed on a mobile app. Telemundo has the Spanish TV rights to the 2018, 2022 and 2026 World Cups.

“This new rights deal with UEFA is a part of our continued commitment to delivering the most comprehensive soccer coverage in the U.S.,” Univision Deportes president Juan Carlos Rodriguez, said in a statement. “Univision Deportes is the home of soccer 365 days per year and this partnership with UEFA is part of our strategy to grow our portfolio and acquire the rights to the teams and leagues that our soccer fans care about most.”

The UEFA Nations League begins in the fall of 2018 and is a first-of-its-kind international competition involving all 54 UEFA member associations. Euro 2020 will be a pan-European competition, with 13 cities in 13 countries hosting the event, which will mark its 60th anniversary.
