Matches Featuring the U.S. and Mexican Men’s National Teams Outperform ESPN’s Broadcast of Texas Tech-TCU Head-to-Head
Mexico-Costa Rica Outkicks Texas Tech-TCU by 49% in Total Viewers 2+
NEW YORK – OCTOBER 15, 2018 – Univision’s Thursday night soccer doubleheader, featuring both the U.S. and Mexican men’s national teams, scored with fútbol fans, delivering impressive audience numbers, led by Mexico-Costa Rica. The evening’s first match, beginning at 7:30 p.m., featured the United States Men’s National Team facing off against Colombia. The two-hour broadcast simulcast on Univision and Univision Deportes Network (UDN) averaged 1.3 million Total Viewers 2+, peaking at 1.9 million Total Viewers 2+ in the 9:30 p.m. quarter hour. The telecast, which aired in direct competition with ESPN’s broadcast of Texas Tech-TCU, outperformed the Big 12 matchup by 4% in Total Viewers 2+ (1.2 million). For the year, the match against Colombia was the third most-watched performance for USMNT on Univision, up 49% with Total Viewers 2+ and 37% with Adults 18-49 audiences compared to previous seven-match average.
The second match, airing exclusively on Univision, was headlined by the Mexican National Team. Beginning immediately following the conclusion of USMNT-Colombia, the game averaged 1.8 million Total Viewers 2+, beating ESPN’s Texas Tech-TCU in Total Viewers 2+ by 49% during its two-hour telecast. The MNT-Costa Rica telecast peaked during the 11:00 p.m. quarter hour with 2.1 million viewers. The tilt averaged 968,000 Adults 18-49.
The USMNT is next in action Tuesday, October 16 versus Peru at 8:00 p.m. on UniMás, with the MNT following at 9:45 p.m. against Chile.
