During Salinas’ Last Week at Univision, the Newscast Will Feature a Series of Stories Celebrating her Distinguished Career and Extraordinary Achievements

MIAMI – DECEMBER 1, 2017 – As María Elena Salinas gets ready to exit Univision on December 8, the Univision News team is preparing a weeklong tribute to the acclaimed journalist who has co-anchored the Network’s flagship evening newscast, “Noticiero Univision,” for 30 years and co-hosted the Sunday primetime newsmagazine “Aquí y Ahora” (Here and Now) for 18 years.
Kicking off on Sunday, December 3 with a special edition of “Aquí y Ahora” titled “María Elena, Siempre” (María Elena, Always), Salinas’ last week at Univision will be filled with memories of her extraordinary achievements over the past three decades, both as a multiple award-winning journalist and as a tireless advocate for the U.S. Hispanic community. Every evening from December 4 through December 7, “Noticiero Univision” will air a different story honoring Salinas, presented by her closest co-anchors and colleagues.
Monday, December 4 – Most Memorable Interviews and Exclusives
Jorge Ramos remembers Salinas’ best interviews with heads of state and other political leaders from the U.S. and Latin America. He also shows clips from some of her most unforgettable exclusives.
Tuesday, December 5 – Empathy and Compassion
Ilia Calderón shows the humane side of the journalist as Salinas covers natural disasters, wars, and humanitarian crises. From a post-earthquake El Salvador in 1986 to the devastation caused by hurricane Mitch in 1998; from the worst flooding ever recorded in Peru to destitute children impacted by war in Iraq. In every disaster or tragic event, anywhere in the world, Salinas’ compassion and deep respect for the victims are always evident.
Wednesday, December 6 – Salinas, the Philanthropist
Teresa Rodríguez highlights the charitable causes that Salinas has supported throughout her life, with special focus on one that she feels especially proud of – the “NAHJ María Elena Salinas Scholarship Program,” which helps Hispanic journalism students achieve their dreams. Viewers will meet a young man who, despite being an undocumented immigrant, was able to earn a degree in journalism with help from the scholarship program and is now a successful reporter for Univision’s affiliate station in Las Vegas.
Thursday, December 7 – The Early Years
María Antonieta Collins takes viewers back in time to follow Salinas during the early years of her broadcast journalism career and learn about her personal history. The segment includes moving testimonials by her first producers, her sister, and the producer of the news specials that earned her numerous awards.
On Friday, December 8, her last day at the “Noticiero Univision” anchor desk, Salinas will say goodbye to her loyal Univision audience.
“While this tribute is minimal compared to María Elena’s invaluable contributions to Univision News and to journalism in general, it’s offered with great affection and respect,” said Daniel Coronell, president of Univision News. “María Elena is inimitable and will continue to be an example of journalistic excellence and integrity for generations to come. She will be sorely missed, but we wish her lots of happiness and success in her new life.”
María Elena Salinas has won the nation’s most prestigious journalism awards, including seven Emmys plus the Peabody, Walter Cronkite, and Gracie awards, among others. She also received the Broadcasting & Cable/Multichannel News Outstanding Achievement Award in Hispanic Television, and was the first Latina to be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Emmy Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. She was inducted into National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Hall of Fame, the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame, and The National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) Hall of Fame. She is a founding member of NAHJ, through which she has awarded scholarships in her name to Latino journalism students. Salinas also is a member of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund board.

MIAMI – 1 DE DICIEMBRE DE 2017 – Mientras María Elena Salinas se dispone a dejar Univision el 8 de diciembre, el equipo de Univision Noticias está preparando una semana de homenajes a la aclamada periodista que ha sido copresentadora del “Noticiero Univision” durante 30 años y co-conductora del magacín de noticias dominical “Aquí y Ahora” por 18 años.
Comenzando el 3 de diciembre con una edición especial de “Aquí y Ahora” titulada “María Elena, Siempre”, los últimos días de Salinas en Univision estarán llenos de recuerdos de sus grandes logros, no solo como periodista ganadora de múltiples premios sino también como defensora incansable de la comunidad hispana en Estados Unidos. Cada tarde entre el 4 y el 7 de diciembre, el “Noticiero Univision” transmitirá un reportaje en honor a Salinas, todos realizados por sus copresentadores y colegas más cercanos.
Lunes 4 de diciembre – Las entrevistas y exclusivas más memorables
Jorge Ramos recuerda las mejores entrevistas de Salinas con jefes de estado y otros líderes políticos de Estados Unidos y América Latina. También presenta fragmentos de algunas de sus exclusivas más inolvidables.
Martes 5 de diciembre – Empatía y compasión
Ilia Calderón muestra el lado humano de la periodista con imágenes de Salinas cubriendo desastres naturales, guerras y crisis humanitarias. Desde El Salvador tras el terremoto de 1986 hasta la destrucción causada por el huracán Mitch en 1998; desde las peores inundaciones jamás registradas en Perú hasta los niños impactados por la guerra en Irak. En cada desastre o suceso trágico, en cualquier parte del mundo, la compasión de Salinas y su profundo respeto por las víctimas siempre sobresalen.
Miércoles 6 de diciembre – Salinas, la filántropa
Teresa Rodríguez resalta las causas benéficas que ha apoyado Salinas a lo largo de su vida, con énfasis especial en uno de sus grandes orgullos: el “Programa de Becas María Elena Salinas NAHJ”, que ayuda a estudiantes de periodismo hispanos a alcanzar sus sueños. Los televidentes conocerán a un joven que, a pesar de ser inmigrante indocumentado, pudo graduarse de periodismo con ayuda del programa de becas y ahora es un exitoso reportero para la estación afiliada de Univision en Las Vegas.
Jueves 7 de diciembre – Sus inicios
María Antonieta Collins lleva a la audiencia al pasado para hacer un recorrido por los inicios de Salinas en el periodismo televisivo y conocer su historia personal. El segmento incluye comentarios de sus primeros productores, su hermana y la productora de los especiales de noticias con los que ganó numerosos premios.
El viernes 8 de diciembre, su último día en la silla de presentadora del “Noticiero Univision”, Salinas se despedirá de su leal audiencia de Univision.
“Aunque este homenaje es realmente mínimo en comparación con las invaluables contribuciones de María Elena a Univision Noticias y al periodismo en general, se lo ofrecemos con todo nuestro cariño y respeto”, expresó Daniel Coronell, Presidente de Univision Noticias. “María Elena es inimitable y seguirá siendo un gran ejemplo de excelencia e integridad periodísticas para las generaciones futuras. La extrañaremos muchísimo, pero le deseamos éxito y felicidad en su nueva vida”.
María Elena Salinas se ha ganado los premios de periodismo más importantes de Estados Unidos, entre ellos siete Emmys y los galardones Peabody, Walter Cronkite y Gracie, entre otros. También recibió el Outstanding Achievement Award in Hispanic Television (Premio al Logro Excepcional en la Televisión Hispana de Broadcasting & Cable/Multichannel News), y fue la primera mujer latina honrada con el Lifetime Achievement Emmy Award (Premio Emmy a la Trayectoria Profesional) de la Academia de Artes y Ciencias de la Televisión. Fue incluida en el Salón de la Fama de National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), el Salón de la Fama de Broadcasting & Cable, y el Salón de la Fama de National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ). Es una de las fundadoras de NAHJ, por medio de la cual ha otorgado becas que llevan su nombre a estudiantes latinos de periodismo.
