MIAMI – SEPTEMBER 25, 2017 – Univision News, the award-winning news division of Univision Communications Inc. (UCI), the leading media company serving Hispanic America, announces the debut of an original seven-episode podcast series that chronicles the fascinating story of Cristina Martínez, an undocumented chef whose extraordinary talent has made her a culinary star despite her immigration status. Titled “Mejor Vete, Cristina” (You Should Leave, Cristina), this new podcast series builds on Univision News’ ongoing strategy of digital innovation, which includes continuous expansion across new platforms and formats to keep Spanish-speaking audiences informed and engaged wherever they consume content.
Martinez became known nationally last year when the restaurant she owns with her husband in Philadelphia, South Philly Barbacoa, was featured as number six in the 2016 list of America’s Best New Restaurants by Bon Appétit magazine. This unexpected achievement brought Martinez into the national limelight, exposing her life story and undocumented status well beyond the local community where she is highly regarded.
Through Martinez’s own poignant testimony and interviews with family members, “Mejor Vete, Cristina” takes listeners on a gripping journey to relive the chef’s dangerous trip from Mexico to Philadelphia and the hardships she has faced as an undocumented immigrant – from leaving her children behind, crossing the Sonora desert in precarious conditions, and escaping an abusive relationship to selling quesadillas on the street to make ends meet. In addition to following her many difficult experiences, listeners will also share in her love story with Benjamin Miller, the American she married despite not speaking each other’s languages, and will also learn how they went from selling tacos from their small apartment to becoming successful restaurateurs as well as activists for immigration reform.
The seven episodes of “Mejor Vete, Cristina” are now available on Uforia Audio On Demand, Audioboom, iTunes, and Spotify. To celebrate the podcast’s launch, Univision News will broadcast one episode daily via Facebook Live beginning today. Additionally, audiences can visit the podcast’s dedicated section on UnivisionNoticias.com, where they will find all episodes with transcriptions, infographics, a photo gallery, and additional information.

Titulado “Mejor Vete, Cristina”, este nuevo podcast se suma a la estrategia de innovación digital de Univision Noticias, la cual incluye la expansión continua a nuevas plataformas y formatos con el fin de informar y mantener la atención e interés de la audiencia hispanohablante dondequiera que consuma contenido.
Martínez se dio a conocer a nivel nacional el año pasado cuando el restaurante que es propiedad de ella y de su esposo en Philadelphia, South Philly Barbacoa, ocupó el sexto lugar en la lista de los Mejores Restaurantes Nuevos de Estados Unidos 2016, publicada por la revista Bon Appétit. Este logro inesperado le dio notoriedad a Martínez y expuso la historia de su vida, y su estatus de indocumentada, mucho más allá de su comunidad local, donde es altamente apreciada.
A través del conmovedor testimonio de la propia Martínez y entrevistas con sus familiares, “Mejor Vete, Cristina” lleva a los oyentes a revivir el peligroso viaje que ésta realizó de México a Philadelphia, y las adversidades que ha tenido que enfrentar como indocumentada – desde dejar atrás a sus hijos, cruzar el desierto de Sonora en condiciones precarias y escapar de una relación abusiva, hasta tener que vender quesadillas en la calle para poder subsistir. Aparte de compartir sus muchas experiencias difíciles, la audiencia también conocerá la historia de amor entre Martínez y Benjamin Miller, el estadounidense con quien se casó a pesar de no hablar inglés ni él español, y se enterará de cómo juntos pasaron de vender tacos en su pequeño apartamento a ser dueños de un restaurante de éxito, además de activistas por la reforma migratoria en Estados Unidos.
