The “Immigrant Sounds” Series features the newest class of U-LAB artists with music and storytelling inspired by their immigrant experience
MIAMI, FL – JUNE 16, 2017 – U-LAB, part of Uforia Music, will commemorate World Refugee Day #WithRefugees on Tuesday, June 20 with special social and digital content leading up to the day featuring U-LAB’s newest class of emerging artists from Berklee College of Music in Boston. The digital content, “Immigrant Sounds” series, features music and storytelling that reflect the immigrant sounds of today – young, diverse and unique – with artists from around the world who performed songs inspired by their native countries and immigrant experience.
U-LAB joins the United Nation’s #WithRefugees global initiative to raise awareness of refugees around the world. Every year, on World Refugee Day, communities across the world honor the courage and resilience of refugees and celebrate their contributions to the communities where they have started a new life. Additionally, U-LAB is honoring Immigrant Heritage Month with special social-first coverage using the hashtag #IAmAnImmigrant during the month of June.
The “Immigrant Sounds” series is infused with jazz, classical music and Colombian folklore from artists from Colombia, Argentina, Greece and around the globe. U-LAB created a special YouTube playlist with the seven artists who perform and share their compelling stories about leaving their home countries. Following is information on these artists:
- Ana Maria Villa is a Colombian singer who talks about treasuring her roots and how she loves singing in her native Spanish language above everything else. She’s proud of her Colombian heritage and sings Colombian folklore.
- Eleni is from Greece and performed a traditional Greek song about migration and the emotional turmoil of leaving her home country. “The best way to preserve your home within you is through music.”
- Isaac Matus is from Colombia and wrote a track inspired by Syrian refugees. “Myself, being a Latin American person here in the U.S., it’s hard for me not to feel compassion and solidarity for those who came in a much harder way.”
- Christiane Karam is from Lebanon and migrated to the U.S. right before 9/11. She founded the Middle Eastern festival at Berklee College in an effort to educate people about different cultures. “Music travels across borders. Music travels across generations and music travels across conflict.”
- Virginia Garcia Alves was born and raised in Spain. Her mom is from Angola. She experienced discrimination at a young age and her music is inspired by African-American culture, specifically Nina Simone.
- Delfina Cheb tells her amazing story about her Jewish and Argentinian roots. Delfina’s father was born in Syria, her mother is of Jewish Hungarian descent and her grandparents escaped WWII. Her music is very nostalgic and evokes the pain of leaving her native country behind.
- Juana Luna is a singer and songwriter from Argentina and her song is inspired by Frida Kahlo.

La serie “Immigrant Sounds” presenta el más reciente grupo de artistas de U-LAB con música y narraciones inspiradas de la experiencia de los inmigrantes
MIAMI, FL – 16 DE JUNIO DE 2017 – U-LAB, parte de Uforia Music, conmemorará el Día Internacional de los Refugiados #WithRefugees el martes, 20 de junio con contenido especial en redes sociales y medios digitales a modo de avance de la presentación del más reciente grupo de artistas emergentes de U-LAB de Berklee College of Music en Boston. El contenido digital de la serie “Immigrant Sounds” combina música y narraciones que reflejan los sonidos de los inmigrantes de la actualidad – jóvenes, diversos y únicos – con artistas de todo el mundo que presentarán canciones inspiradas en su país de origen y su experiencia como inmigrantes.
U-LAB se suma al programa internacional #WithRefugees de las Naciones Unidas para generar conciencia sobre los refugiados de todo el mundo. Todos los años, en el Día Internacional de los Refugiados, numerosas comunidades alrededor del planeta destacan la valentía y resiliencia de los refugiados, y celebran sus aportes a las comunidades donde han iniciado una vida nueva. Además, durante el mes de junio, U-LAB conmemorará el Mes del Inmigrante con cobertura especial que saldrá primero en redes sociales, usando el hashtag #IAmAnImmigrant.
La serie “Immigrant Sounds” incluye jazz, música clásica y folclor colombiano de artistas de Colombia, Argentina, Grecia y otros países. U-LAB creó una lista especial en YouTube con los siete artistas que se presentan y cuentan sus conmovedoras historias de cuando se marcharon de su país. Se ofrece información sobre los artistas a continuación:
- Ana María Villa es una cantante colombiana que valora mucho sus raíces y le gusta cantar en español, su lengua materna, más que nada. Se enorgullece de su herencia colombiana y canta música folclórica de ese país.
- Eleni es de Grecia y presentó una canción tradicional griega sobre la migración y el impacto emocional de dejar su país de origen. “La mejor manera de conservar tu hogar es por medio de la música”.
- Isaac Matus es de Colombia y escribió una canción inspirada en los refugiados de Siria. “Como soy un latinoamericano que vive en los Estados Unidos, es imposible no sentir compasión y solidaridad por quienes tuvieron una experiencia mucho más difícil”.
- Christiane Karam es del Líbano y se trasladó a los Estados Unidos poco antes del 11 de septiembre. Fundó un festival del Medio Oriente en Berklee College para tratar de informar a la gente sobre las diversas culturas. “La música trasciende fronteras. La música trasciende generaciones y la música trasciende conflictos”.
- Virginia García Álves nació y se crió en España. Su mamá es de Angola. Fue víctima de discriminación a temprana edad, y la cultura afroamericana, específicamente Nina Simone, es su fuente de inspiración musical.
- Delfina Cheb cuenta una asombrosa historia sobre sus raíces judías y argentinas. El padre de Delfina nació en Siria, su madre es judía de descendencia húngara y sus abuelos escaparon durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Su música es muy nostálgica y evoca el dolor de dejar atrás la patria.
- Juana Luna es una cantautora de Argentina y su canción se inspira en Frida Kahlo.
