Top entertainers and athletes joined Univision personalities to celebrate athletic excellence at the third annual awards show
Giovani dos Santos, Edson Puch, and Chicharito Hernández headline list of winners
MIAMI, FL – DECEMBER 18, 2016 – The worlds of sports and entertainment came together Sunday evening to toast the year’s most important sporting events and athletes on the third annual broadcast of the “Premios Univision Deportes” (Univision Sports Awards). The biggest names in sports, including up-and-coming athletes, stars in their prime and retiring legends, were celebrated for their feats on and off the field during a two-hour awards gala that featured performances from top entertainers, including Gente de Zona and Elvis Crespo.
Hosted by telenovela star Julián Gil, Liga MX coaching legend Miguel “Piojo” Herrera and “Sal y Pimienta’s” Karina Banda, the gala saluted athletic heroes from sports including soccer, basketball, baseball, football, boxing, auto racing, extreme sports, tennis, and gymnastics. Off-field achievements also received accolades, with Puerto Rican boxer Miguel Cotto receiving a special humanitarian award for his work against childhood obesity. In addition to the Univision Network, the program was broadcast on UDN, the nation’s No. 1 Spanish-language sports network.

Winners were chosen in 20 categories, in some cases by fan vote, from a list of more than 50 nominees. Criteria included passion, athletic excellence, dedication to the community, and connection to Hispanic sports fans. Here is the complete list of 2016 winners by category:

The Univision Network pulled out all the stops to make the evening unforgettable. Personalities from the network, including “Tres Veces Ana” costars Angelique Boyer and Sebastián Rulli and “Vino el Amor” star Kimberly Dos Ramos were on hand alongside former Miss Universe Zuleyka Rivera and Nuestra Belleza Latina winners Clarissa Molina (2016) and Nastassja Bolívar (2011). In addition to athletes up for awards, sporting legends from the past and present also attended, including Team USA veteran Jozy Altidore, as well as Mexican soccer legend Pável Pardo.
The awards show, which aired at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT (7:00 p.m. Central) was preceded by a special red-carpet edition of Univision Network’s hit Sunday entertainment magazine “Sal y Pimienta” (Salt and Pepper).
The lineup of entertainers on hand to fete the athletes was as impressive as the list of honorees. Hit merengue singer and Latin GRAMMY® winner Elvis Crespo had the crowd on its feet with “Bailar,” Latin GRAMMY® honoree and banda star Lupillo Rivera sang “El Malo,” and Mexican crooner Joss Favela captivated the audience with his “No Vuelvas a Llamar.” Colombian urban artist Karol G showed why she earned a “Premios Juventud” nomination this year by singing a medley of her hits “Hello” and “Casi Nada.” Fellow reggaetón artists and “Premios Juventud” honorees Gente de Zona and multiple-award-winning Mexican regional superstar Larry Hernández also made sure the evening was a celebration. Performance artist David Garibaldi wowed the crowd by painting a portrait of sports icon Muhammad Ali. Among the evening’s highlights was Cuban singer Lena’s emotional tribute to Miami Marlins pitcher and hometown hero José Fernández.

MIAMI, FL –18 DE DICIEMBRE DE 2016 – El mundo del deporte y el del entretenimiento se unieron la noche del domingo para un homenaje a los eventos deportivos y atletas más importantes del año durante la tercera trasmisión anual de “Premios Univision Deportes”. Se aplaudieron a reconocidos deportistas, entre ellos atletas prometedores, estrellas en su apogeo y leyendas retiradas, por sus logros dentro y fuera de la cancha durante una ceremonia de gala de dos horas con actuaciones por populares artistas, incluyendo a Gente de Zona y Elvis Crespo.
La ceremonia, bajo la conducción de la estrella de telenovelas Julián Gil, el legendario entrenador de Liga MX Miguel “Piojo” Herrera y Karina Banda de “Sal y Pimienta”, festejó a héroes del deporte como fútbol, baloncesto, fútbol americano, boxeo, carreras de autos, deportes extremos, tenis y gimnasia. Los logros fuera de la cancha también recibieron galardones. El boxeador puertorriqueño Miguel Cotto recibió el reconocimiento especial a la labor humanitaria por sus esfuerzos por combatir la obesidad infantil. Además de la Cadena Univision, el programa se trasmitió en UDN, la principal cadena deportiva en español del país.

Se seleccionaron a ganadores en 20 categorías, en algunos casos por medio de votación por los fans, de una lista de más de 50 candidatos. Entre los criterios utilizados estuvieron pasión, excelencia atlética, dedicación a la comunidad y conexión a los fans hispanos del deporte. La Cadena Univision hizo uso de todos sus recursos para que la noche fuera inolvidable. Estuvieron presentes personalidades de la cadena, incluyendo a los protagonistas de “Tres Veces Ana” Angelique Boyer y Sebastián Rulli, como también Kimberly Dos Ramos de “Vino el Amor”, de lado de la ex Miss Universo Zuleyka Rivera y las ganadoras de “Nuestra Belleza Latina” Clarissa Molina (2016) y Nastassja Bolívar (2011). Además de los atletas nominados a premios, concurrieron legendarios deportistas pasados y presentes, incluyendo el veterano futbolista de la selección de los Estados Unidos Jozy Altidore, como también el legendario futbolista mexicano Pável Pardo.
Antes del programa de premiación, que se emitió a las 8:00 p.m. Este/Pacífico (7:00 p.m. Centro) se trasmitió una edición especial de alfombra roja de “Sal y Pimienta”, el popular programa dominical de entretenimiento de la Cadena Univision.
El grupo de artistas presentes para festejar a los deportistas fue tan impresionante como la lista de homenajeados. El popular cantante de merengue y ganador del Latin GRAMMY® Elvis Crespo hizo brincar al público con “Bailar”, mientras que la estrella de banda Lupillo Rivera, también galardonado con el Latin GRAMMY®, cantó “El Malo”, y el intérprete mexicano Joss Favela cautivó a la audiencia con “No Vuelvas a Llamar”. La artista colombiana de música urbana Karol G hizo evidente por qué fue nominada a “Premios Juventud” este año cuando cantó un potpurrí de sus éxitos “Hello” y “Casi Nada”. Gente de Zona, cantantes de música urbana y ganadores de “Premios Juventud”, y Larry Hernández, superestrella de la música regional mexicana y ganador de premios múltiples, también hicieron una celebración de la velada. El artista David Garibaldi asombró al público al pintar un retrato del ídolo de los deportes Muhammad Ali. Entre los momentos más memorables de la velada estuvo el emotivo homenaje por la cantante cubana Lena al lanzador José Fernández de los Miami Marlins, quien era un héroe de esa ciudad.
