WHAT: More than a show about soccer, “Club de Cuervos” (Crows Soccer Club) is a hilarious tale of ambition and sibling rivalry, topics as old as the Bible yet as timely as Facebook and WhatsApp. Audiences and critics love it: the “Huffington Post” praises the way it “oscillates brilliantly from laugh-out-loud comedy to poignant drama.” Directed by Gary “Gaz” Alazraki and written by a team of top scriptwriters from Mexico and the U.S., “Club de Cuervos” is the first Spanish-language original series from Netflix.
Salvador Iglesias (Luis Rábago), owner of Cuervos F.C., has spent a lifetime building the team into a force in Mexican soccer and his fictional hometown of Nuevo Toledo into a bustling small metropolis. His sudden death gives way to a power struggle between his smart, hardworking daughter Isabel (Mariana Treviño) and her playboy half-brother Chava (Luis Gerardo Méndez, who starred in “The Noble Family,” a film directed by Gary “Gaz” Alazraki and Mexico’s second highest-grossing film ever).
Isabel loses the first round, and Chava is named club president. Season one of “Club de Cuervos” tells what happens next. Determined to emerge from his father’s shadow, Chava embarks on an ambitious (and reckless) plan to turn the Cuervos into the “Real Madrid of Latin America.” Meanwhile, Isabel, furious at having been passed over for the top job, probably because of her gender, plots to take control using every tool at her disposal, including social media, which form an integral part of the series.
Along the way, level-headed club VP Félix Domingo (Daniel Giménez Cacho) tries to keep things from spinning completely out of control while dealing with Chava, Isabel, their father’s pregnant girlfriend (Stephanie Cayo), the team’s declining performance on the field, a talented but libidinous coach (Emilio Guerrero), and a clueless young rookie (Juan Pablo de Santiago). Ongoing comic relief is provided by Jesús Zavala as Chava’s assistant, the obsequious and misnamed Hugo Sánchez.

Salvador Iglesias (Luis Rábago), el dueño de Cuervos F.C., ha dedicado la vida a convertir al equipo en una potencia del fútbol mexicano, y la ciudad ficticia de Nuevo Toledo en una activa mini-metrópolis. Su muerte súbita da pie a una pugna de poder entre su hija Isabel (Mariana Treviño), muy trabajadora e inteligente, y su mujeriego medio hermano Chava (Luis Gerardo Méndez, protagonista de “La Familia Noble”, una película también dirigida por Gary “Gaz” Alazraki y segunda más taquillera en la historia de México).
Isabel pierde la primera ronda, y se nombra a Chava presidente del club. La primera temporada de “Club de Cuervos” cuenta lo que sucede luego. Decidido a salir de la sombra de su padre, Chava emprende un plan ambicioso (e imprudente) para hacer de Cuervos el “Real Madrid de Latinoamérica”. Mientras tanto, Isabel, furiosa porque la pasaron por alto para el cargo principal, probablemente por ser mujer, conspira para asumir el control usando todos los recursos a su disposición, incluyendo las redes sociales, que son un aspecto crucial en la serie.
Entretanto, el ecuánime vicepresidente del club Félix Domingo (Daniel Giménez Cacho) trata de impedir que se pierda el total control de las cosas mientras lidia con Chava, Isabel, la novia embarazada de su padre (Stephanie Cayo), el desempeño cada vez peor del equipo en la cancha, un entrenador de talento pero libidinoso (Emilio Guerrero) y un joven novato que está en la luna (Juan Pablo de Santiago). El constante toque de comedia lo aporta Jesús Zavala, quien hace de asistente de Chava, el servil pero mal llamado Hugo Sánchez.
