MIAMI – JULY 14, 2016 – Just days before the Republican and Democratic national conventions, Univision News, the award-winning news division of Univision Communications Inc. (UCI), announces the findings of its new comprehensive survey conducted exclusively among Latino voters after the U.S. primaries and caucuses ended. Commissioned by Univision News and conducted by the research firms Bendixen & Amandi International and The Tarrance Group, the bipartisan poll interviewed 1,000 Hispanic registered voters across the United States between July 1 and July 10, 2016 to record their opinions and voting intentions now that the final presidential candidates have been defined. This survey follows a prior one commissioned by Univision News and The Washington Post, which polled Hispanic voters during the primary elections and was published in February 2016.
Following are highlights of the “Destino 2016: National Hispanic Voter Survey”:
- 97% of registered Hispanic voters say that they are very likely or somewhat likely to vote in November, and 52% say they are very motivated by the 2016 presidential election.
- Hillary Clinton has a 48-point lead over Donald Trump among registered Hispanic voters – 67% vs. 19%. Trump’s numbers are significantly below the percentage of Latino votes he would need to win the election (at least 40%). Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson only garners 4% of the Hispanic vote.
- A whopping 77% of Hispanic voters have an unfavorable opinion of Donald Trump, while 69% have a favorable view of Hillary Clinton.
- Opposition to the construction of a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border is overwhelming among Latinos polled—79% disapprove the wall, 19% approve it.
- The principal issues that concern U.S. Hispanics and will drive them to the polls this November are jobs/the economy (25%), immigration (18%), and terrorism (12%).
- Hispanic voters are divided over the issue of whether Hillary Clinton is a liar—42% believe she is, 39% believe she is not, and 19% don’t know.
- The great majority of Latino voters consider Donald Trump a racist – 73% say yes, 20% say no.
- Latino registered voters feel that Republicans in Congress are mostly responsible for the deadlock on immigration reform—44% blame Republicans, 21% blame President Obama, 12% blame the Supreme Court.
- 58% of Latinos polled believe that Hillary Clinton would be better for the economy, while 23% think Donald Trump would better handle the economy.
- The sale of military-style assault weapons should be banned, say 60% of Hispanic voters.
- Most Hispanics reject the concept of a temporary ban against Muslims entering the United States – 54% are against it and 34% favor it.
