Celebrating the Best in Mexican Soccer, the Awards will Take Place in the U.S. for the First Time at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on Saturday, July 9

MIAMI – JUNE 30, 2016 – Univision Deportes, the multimedia sports division of Univision Communications Inc. (UCI) that also includes UDN, the No. 1 Spanish-language sports network, announced the Balón de Oro Awards to honor the top athletes in the Liga MX, the most-watched soccer league in the U.S. The awards presentation will include performances by renowned Latin artists, Intocable, Adriel Favela, Alejandra Guzmán, Banda el Recodo, Lupillo Rivera with Helen Ochoa, Noel Torres and many more. The ceremony will air live on Saturday, July 9, 2016 on the Univision Network and UDN (Univision Deportes Network) at 8:00 p.m. ET/ 7:00 p.m. CT/ 5:00 p.m. PT from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, CA.
The evening will be hosted by “Despierta America” co-host Alan Tacher with the participation of Univision Network’s Karina Banda. The two-hour presentation will celebrate soccer figures from the Liga MX Apertura 2015 and Clausura 2016 for their accomplishments on the field. The ceremony will take place prior to the emblematic Mexican championship Campeón de Campeones (Champion of Champions), played between the winners of the two most recent seasons of Liga MX and SúperCopa, which will determine the ultimate Copa MX champion between the last two Mexican Cup winners. Vying for the SúperCopa will be Tiburones Rojos del Veracruz and Chivas de Guadalajara for the SúperCopa. Apertura 2015 champions Tigres UANL will face the Clausura 2016 Champion Pachuca for the title of Campeón de Campeones.
“Fútbol is an integral part of our community and as the home of soccer for Hispanic America, we are proud to come together and celebrate the talented athletes who participate in Liga MX,” said Juan Carlos Rodriguez, president of Univision Deportes. “Balón de Oro is another example of Univision Deportes delivering the sports content that is most important to our fans.”
Athletes will be honored in 15 categories and fans will have the opportunity to vote in 10 of the categories.
Fans will have the chance to be part of the voting, along with the 18 Liga MX coaches and the League’s Editorial Council, in the seven position specific awards:
- Best Goalie: Nahuel Guzmán and Agustín Marchesín
- Best Defense: Gerardo Alcoba and Óscar Murillo
- Best Defensive Midfielder: Guido Pizarro and Osvaldo Martínez
- Best Offensive Midfielder: Edwin Cardona and Hirving Lozano
- Best Forward: Emanuel Villa and André-Pierre Gignac
- Best Coach of the Year: Ricardo Ferretti and Antonio Mohamed
- Best Rookie: César Montes and Alexis Vega
Additionally, fans will decide the winners of two more categories:
- Best Goal: Fan Vote
- Best Save from a Goalie: Fan Vote

MIAMI – 30 DE JUNIO DE 2016- Univision Deportes, la división deportiva multimedia de Univision Communications Inc. (UCI) que también incluye a UDN, la cadena No. 1 de deportes en español, anunció los premios “Balón de Oro” para homenajear a destacados deportistas de la Liga MX, la liga de fútbol con mayor sintonía en los Estados Unidos. La ceremonia de premiación incluirá presentaciones de renombrados artistas latinos: Intocable, Adriel Favela, Alejandra Guzmán, Banda el Recodo, Lupillo Rivera con Helen Ochoa, Noel Torres y otros. La ceremonia se trasmitirá en vivo el sábado, 9 de julio de 2016 en la Cadena Univision y UDN (Univision Deportes Network) a las 8:00 p.m. Este/ 7:00 p.m. Centro/ 5:00 p.m. Pacífico desde el Shrine Auditorium en Los Ángeles.
La velada estará a cargo de Alan Tacher, copresentador de “Despierta América”, y contará con la participación de Karina Banda, presentadora de la Cadena Univision. En la presentación de dos horas se aplaudirá a futbolistas de la Liga MX Apertura 2015 y Clausura 2016 por sus logros en la cancha. La ceremonia tendrá lugar antes del emblemático torneo mexicano Campeón de Campeones, en el que juegan los dos ganadores de la más reciente temporada de la Liga MX, y la SúperCopa, en la que se decidirá al máximo campeón de la Copa MX entre los dos últimos ganadores de la Copa Mexicana. Se disputarán la SúperCopa los Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz y el Chivas de Guadalajara. Los campeones de Apertura 2015, Tigres UANL, se enfrentarán al campeón de Clausura 2016, Pachuca, por el título de Campeón de Campeones.
