Pay Before: Univision Mastercard Prepaid Card Hits Walmart Shelves

Oct 6, 2017

Univision Mastercard Prepaid Card is now available in approximately 300 Walmart stores in California, Texas and Florida. The move is part of the brand’s continued expansion into retail spaces in prominently Hispanic regions.

The GPR card, which was first launched in 2009, was designed by Univision Communications Inc. to serve the unbanked and underbanked Hispanic population. Univision operates the No. 1 network for U.S. Hispanics, according to its website.

Through distribution partnerships with Blackhawk Network and InComm, Univision has expanded its retail footprint since 2013 to include 6,800 grocery stores (Safeway, Albertsons, Winn Dixie) throughout the U.S. and select C-stores in Texas. Last year, it added approximately 8,000 Family Dollar stores nationwide.

“Univision has an existing relationship with Walmart on the media side, so this partnership with the prepaid card expands that relationship,” says Bob Harada, vice president of Univision Direct. “This deal allows us to broaden our retail reach to distribute our prepaid cards in the Big Box channel to obtain new customers.” The partnership also gives consumers another convenient location to buy cards and reload, he says.

There is no purchase price for cards sold online, but the purchase price at retail is $4.95 in grocery stores and $3.95 in Family Dollar stores. Harada says the company will be lowering the price to $3.95 across its retail footprint next year.

Univision also has added popular morning show host Ana Patricia Gamez as a spokesperson for the card.
