NEW YORK – APRIL 29, 2019 – In honor of award-winning reporter and news anchor, Luis Gómez, Univision New York announced today the Luis Gómez Scholarship and a new series of health and wellness initiatives.
Gómez began his career in Mexico. He moved to the United States 13 years ago, where he embarked on a new chapter as a journalist at our Univision Austin and Houston stations before making his way to New York. He joined the Univision 41 family as a reporter in 2014. In 2016, he became the morning news anchor for Al Despertar. Gómez was diagnosed with testicular cancer at the end of 2017, marking the beginning of a long battle. Despite his diagnosis, he never lost hope and documented his experience in a series titled “Corazón de Guerrero,” (Heart of a Warrior). Gómez used his struggle to raise awareness about the disease among Hispanics and reach out to others battling cancer. He passed away at the age of 40 on Saturday, April 6, surrounded by family and friends.
“Luis fought bravely against cancer and in his darkest days found ways to touch the lives of many in our community and Univision family. He leaves a huge gap in our lives,” said Esteban Creste, Vice President of News at Univision New York. “The Luis Gómez scholarship and the new series of health and wellness initiatives are our way to show gratitude for his commitment and to ensure that his legacy lives on.”
Created in partnership with the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ), the Luis Gómez scholarship honors the lifework and commitment of Gómez to the Hispanic community. The scholarship will afford college-bound high school seniors, college undergraduates and graduate students the opportunity to pursue careers in English or Spanish-language print, broadcast, digital, or photojournalism. Each year for the next four years, students attending four-year colleges and community colleges in the United States and Puerto Rico with a GPA of 3.0 or better will be eligible for the $2,000 annual scholarship.
“NAHJ is honored to play a role in commemorating the legacy of Luis Gómez,” said Alberto B. Mendoza, NAHJ Executive Director. “Luis was an exemplary figure not only as a journalist, but as a human being, friend, and colleague. In his memory, NAHJ will use this scholarship to recognize the next generation talent that resembles the heroic traits embodied by Luis Gómez throughout his life,” he added.
Gómez used his struggle to raise awareness and to help other cope with cancer, never losing his sense of humor and willingness to help others. Following his example, Univision New York is planning a series of health and wellness initiatives including:
- A weekly health segment titled “Corazón de Guerrero,” (Heart of a Warrior) to focus on men’s health and general prevention of testicular cancer;
- An annual health fair in partnership with local hospitals to help raise awareness of the disease and tips for prevention and;
- A special show dedicated to the education and early detection of cancer for both men and women.

Univision Nueva York Crea Nueva Beca de NAHJ y Nuevos Programas de Información sobre la Salud como Homenaje a la Vida y los Aportes del Galardonado Presentador de Noticias Luis Gómez
NUEVA YORK – 29 DE ABRIL DE 2019– En homenaje al galardonado reportero y presentador de noticias Luis Gómez, Univision Nueva York anunció hoy una beca en su nombre y una nueva serie de proyectos de salud y bienestar.
Gómez inició su carrera en México. Se mudó a Estados Unidos hace 13 años, donde inició un nuevo capítulo de su vida como periodista en las estaciones de Univision en Austin y Houston, para luego trasladarse a Nueva York. Se incorporó a la familia de Univision 41 como reportero en 2014. En 2016, pasó a ser el presentador del noticiero matutino Al Despertar. Gómez recibió un diagnóstico de cáncer testicular a fin de 2017, lo que dio inicio a una larga batalla contra la enfermedad. A pesar del diagnóstico, nunca perdió la esperanza. Documentó la experiencia en una serie titulada “Corazón de guerrero”. Gómez aprovechó su lucha para generar consciencia sobre la enfermedad entre los hispanos y apoyar a otros que combatían el cáncer. Falleció rodeado de familiares y amigos el sábado, 6 de abril a los 40 años de edad.
“Luis combatió el cáncer valientemente e incluso en sus peores días encontró maneras de tener un impacto en muchas vidas en nuestra comunidad y la familia Univision. Deja un gran vacío en nuestras vidas”, dijo Esteban Creste, vicepresidente de Noticias de Univision Nueva York. “La beca Luis Gómez y la nueva serie de proyectos de salud y bienestar son maneras de mostrar nuestro agradecimiento por su compromiso y de asegurar que su legado perdure”.
Creada conjuntamente con la National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ), la beca Luis Gómez otorga reconocimiento a la trayectoria y el compromiso de Gómez con la comunidad hispana. La beca les dará la oportunidad a alumnos de último año de secundaria que planean ir a la universidad, de licenciatura y de posgrados a estudiar carreras de periodismo impreso, digital, gráfico y de difusión en inglés o español. Cada uno de los próximos cuatro años, los estudiantes que vayan a universidades e instituciones comunitarias de cuatro años en Estados Unidos y Puerto Rico y tengan un promedio de 3.0 o más podrán postular a la beca anual de $2,000.

Mendoza, director ejecutivo de NAHJ. “Luis fue una figura ejemplar, no solo como periodista, sino como ser humano, amigo y colega. En su memoria, NAHJ usará esta beca para otorgar reconocimiento a la próxima generación de talento que asemeje las heroicas cualidades que este personificó durante su vida”, agregó.
Gómez aprovechó su lucha para generar consciencia y ayudar a otros a enfrentar el cáncer, sin perder nunca el sentido del humor ni la disposición a ayudar a los demás. Para seguir su ejemplo, Univision Nueva York planea una serie de proyectos de salud y bienestar, entre ellos:
- Un segmento semanal de salud titulado “Corazón de guerrero”, que se centrará en la salud masculina y la prevención general del cáncer testicular;
- Una feria anual de salud con hospitales locales para generar consciencia sobre la enfermedad y ofrecer consejos para prevenirla, y
- Un programa especial dedicado a la instrucción y detección temprana del cáncer en hombres y mujeres.
