“The Bachata King” Romeo Santos Presented with “Premio Lo Nuestro a la Excelencia”; Lili Estefan Recognized with “Premio a la Trayectoria”
Carlos Vives & Shakira, CNCO and Gente de Zona are the night’s big winners
MIAMI, FL – FEBRUARY 23, 2017 – In an impressive evening during Spanish-language TV’s longest-running, most popular musical celebration in the U.S., “Premio Lo Nuestro a la Música Latina” 2017 celebrated unity through the power of music for an unforgettable night for fans and artists alike. With the most LIVE performances ever, the show aired from the AmericanAirlines Arena in Miami, FL on Thursday, February 23 at 7 p.m. ET/PT (6 p.m. Central).
Gente de Zona set the mood with their hyper-reality street scene to kick off the party with a medley of their top hits. The Cuban duo did not leave the party empty handed, taking home three awards including Album of the Year, Group or Duo of the Year and Tropical Album of the Year.
Also leaving as big winners were the iconic Carlos Vives and Shakira, winning three awards including Video of the Year, Single of the Year and Tropical Song of the Year. Plus, the winning band from season one of Univision Network’s “La Banda,” CNCO, made some noise returning to the PLN stage with their first-time nominations to take three of the five awards in the Pop/Rock Category for Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Group/Duo of the Year. Other multiple winners of the evening included Banda Sinaloense MS de Sergio Lizarraga (2), Maluma (2), Julión Álvarez (2), and J Balvin (2).
“The Bachata King” Romeo Santos was clearly moved after receiving the “Premio Lo Nuestro a la Excelencia” award for his contributions made throughout the years to Latin music. Santos later put on a soaring performance for the worldwide television premiere of his new single “Héroe Favorito.”
One of the evening’s show-stopping moments was when Ricky Martin took the stage one last time before kicking off his Las Vegas residency, giving the PLN audience a preview of his modern artistic performance, and had everyone on their feet.
Gracing the stage as the recipient of the “Premio a la Trayectoria” career award was co-host of “El Gordo y La Flaca” (The Scoop and The Skinny) Lili Estefan. In one of the night’s more poignant moments, award-winning journalist Jorge Ramos characterized how the real win of the night was coming together as Latinos, as people, to recognize how our power grows in numbers and our voice strengthens in unity.
Throughout the evening, artists and fans united through the power of music. Wisin, alongside Zion y Lennox and Tito El Bambino, energized the house performing “Vacaciones.” Popular favorites Thalía and De la Ghetto, came together from different musical genres for a lively performance. Julión Álvarez performed “Afuera esta Lloviendo” with a LIVE banda. Ricardo Montaner had everyone hashtagging #TBT with his throwback moment singing “Me Va a Extranar” featuring Julión Álvarez.
The epic moments did not stop there with additional electrifying numbers by Juanes, Carlos Vives, Gerardo Ortiz, J Balvin, Jesse y Joy, Lucero, Prince Royce and Reik.
The PLN celebration began at 7 p.m. ET/PT (6 p.m. Central), as nominees, performers and other celebrities walked down the magenta carpet during the “Noche de Estrellas” (Night of Stars) pre-show, which was hosted by Univision’s Chiquinquirá Delgado, Raúl de Molina, Tony Dandrades, Daniela Di Giacomo, and William Valdés.
Valdés continued alongside Univision personality Alejandra Espinoza and best-selling recording artist Luis Coronel to celebrate with artists and fans throughout the awards ceremony.
“Premio Lo Nuestro a la Música Latina” recognizes and celebrates the top artists in the U.S. Latin music industry. The winners are chosen by popular vote, making it ‘the people’s award’ (el premio de todos).
In addition to the live broadcast on the Univision Network and streaming on Univision Now, fans were able to enjoy all the backstage action via PremioLoNuestro.com and the Univision Conecta app.
Music fans also came together to talk about their favorite Latin artists on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat via PremioLoNuestro and by using the hashtag #PremioLoNuestro on their favorite social media platforms.

MIAMI, FL – 23 DE FEBRERO DE 2017 – En una impresionante noche durante la celebración musical más popular y de más larga trayectoria de la televisión en español en los Estados Unidos, “Premio Lo Nuestro a la Música Latina” 2017 celebró la unidad a través del poder de la música en una velada inolvidable tanto para los fans como para los artistas. El show, con el mayor número de presentaciones EN VIVO en su historia, se trasmitió desde el AmericanAirlines Arena en Miami, FL el jueves, 23 de febrero a las 7 p.m. Este/Pacífico (6 p.m. Centro).
Gente de Zona creó el ambiente adecuado con una escena urbana muy parecida a la realidad para dar inicio a la fiesta con un popurrí de sus mejores éxitos. El dúo cubano no se fue de la celebración con las manos vacías, llevándose a casa tres premios: Álbum del Año, Grupo o Dúo del Año y Álbum Tropical del Año.
Entre los más premiados también figuraron los idolatrados Carlos Vives y Shakira, quienes recibieron tres galardones: Video del Año, Canción del Año y Canción Tropical del Año. Además, el grupo ganador de la primera temporada de “La Banda” de la Cadena Univision, CNCO, causó sensación al regresar al escenario de PLN con sus primeras nominaciones para llevarse tres de los cinco premios en la categoría Pop/Rock: Álbum del Año, Canción del Año y Grupo/Dúo del Año. También ganaron varios premios durante la velada la Banda Sinaloense MS de Sergio Lizarraga (2), Maluma (2), Julión Álvarez (2) y J Balvin (2).
“El Rey de la Bachata” Romeo Santos estuvo claramente emocionado después de recibir el “Premio Lo Nuestro a la Excelencia” por los aportes que ha hecho durante muchos años a la música latina. Tras estos emotivos momentos, Santos realizó una presentación espectacular con el estreno en televisión a nivel internacional de su nueva canción, “Héroe Favorito”.
Uno de los momentos culminantes de la noche fue cuando Ricky Martin subió al escenario una vez más antes de comenzar su residencia en Las Vegas, ofreciendo al público de PLN un adelanto de su moderna presentación artística, que puso a todos de pie.
Lili Estefan, copresentadora de “El Gordo y La Flaca”, engalanó el escenario como la ganadora del “Premio a la Trayectoria”. En uno de los momentos más emocionantes de la noche, el galardonado periodista Jorge Ramos se dirigió al público para decirles que la verdadera victoria de la noche es que los latinos se están uniendo como pueblo, para reconocer que su poder aumenta en números y su voz es más fuerte si permanecen unidos.
Durante toda la noche, el poder de la música unió a los artistas y fans. Wisin, junto con Zion y Lennox y Tito El Bambino, llenaron de energía a todos al presentar “Vacaciones”. Los populares Thalía y De la Ghetto, se juntaron desde géneros musicales distintos para ofrecer una animada interpretación. Julión Álvarez presentó “Afuera Está Lloviendo” con una banda EN VIVO. Ricardo Montaner hizo que todos empezaran a usar el hashtag #TBT con un momento del recuerdo, cuando entonó “Me Va a Extrañar” con Julión Álvarez.
Los momentos épicos continuaron con las electrizantes presentaciones de Juanes, Carlos Vives, Gerardo Ortiz, J Balvin, Jesse y Joy, Lucero, Prince Royce y Reik.
La celebración de PLN inició a las 7 p.m. Este/Pacífico (6 p.m. Centro), cuando los nominados, artistas y otras celebridades desfilaron por la alfombra magenta durante el programa de antesala “Noche de Estrellas”, que estuvo a cargo de Chiquinquirá Delgado, Raúl de Molina, Tony Dandrades, Daniela Di Giacomo y William Valdés de Univision.
Valdés junto con la reconocida Alejandra Espinoza de Univision y el popular músico Luis Coronel, continuaron celebrando con artistas y fans durante toda la ceremonia de premiación.
El “Premio Lo Nuestro a la Música Latina” otorga reconocimiento y celebra los éxitos de los artistas más destacados de la industria de música latina en los Estados Unidos. Los ganadores son seleccionados mediante voto popular, lo que lo convierte en ‘el premio de todos’.
