The Collaborative Project Kicks Off Today and Can Be Viewed in English at Documenting Hate and in Spanish at El Reporte Del Odio.
MIAMI – JANUARY 17, 2017 – Univision News, the award-winning news division of Univision Communications, Inc. (UCI), the leading media company serving Hispanic America, announces its participation in “Documenting Hate,” a nationwide coalition of diverse news organizations initiated by the independent nonprofit journalism organization ProPublica with the purpose of creating the most authoritative national database of hate crimes and bias incidents ever assembled in the United States. Other partners to date include The Google News Lab, the New York Times Opinion Section, WNYC, The Root, Latino USA, First Draft, FUSION, Meedan, New America Media, Ushahidi, Buzzfeed News, The Advocate, and the University of Miami School of Communication. The coalition is also working with civil rights groups such as the Southern Poverty Law Center, The Human Rights Campaign, and the Anti-Defamation League. Launching today, the project can be viewed in English at Documenting Hate and in Spanish at El Reporte del Odio.
The “Documenting Hate” initiative will assemble a trove of data from law enforcement, community groups, nonprofit organizations, news reports, social media, and directly from victims and witnesses. ProPublica reporters and a volunteer network, including journalism students throughout the country, will authenticate reports and then disseminate them to local media partners and other groups across the nation through a secure website. “Documenting Hate” also aims to gather information on incidents of harassment and intimidation – both in the digital realm and the material world – that may not rise to the level of a criminal offense and are currently not documented and analyzed by any government agency.

“The need for real data has never been more acute,” said Scott Klein, ProPublica Deputy Managing Editor. “Experts who have studied hate for decades tell us they’ve noticed an uptick in hate crimes since the presidential election, and what data there is has confirmed those hunches. But with thousands of police departments failing to report alleged or even confirmed hate crimes to the federal government, we lack foundational information about how many of these crimes occur in any given year, the nature of crimes and bias incidents, and what works to discourage them. The Documenting Hate project seeks to support citizens and lawmakers with reliable data to help understand the problem, and to encourage local reporting to make the problem hard to ignore.”
Federal law requires the FBI to request hate crime statistics from state and local law enforcement agencies. However, thousands of those state and local agencies do not comply. As a result, while the FBI tracks between 5 and 10 thousand hate crimes a year, an annual survey by the Bureau of Justice Statistics estimates there may be as many as a quarter of a million.
For the collective gathering of hate crime related data, “Documenting Hate” will use techniques developed for ProPublica’s collaborative Electionland project last year, in which Univision News also participated as a media partner.

UNIVISION NOTICIAS SE UNE A LA COALICIÓN “REPORTE DEL ODIO” DE PROPUBLICA PARA CREAR LA PRIMERA BASE DE DATOS SOBRE DELITOS DE ODIO E INCIDENTES DE PREJUICIO REPORTADOS EN EL PAÍS
El proyecto colaborativo se lanza hoy y puede ser visto en inglés en Documenting Hate y en español en El Reporte del Odio
MIAMI – 17 DE ENERO DE 2017 – Univision Noticias, la galardonada división de noticias de Univision Communications Inc. (UCI), la principal empresa de medios de comunicación al servicio de la comunidad hispana en los Estados Unidos, anuncia su participación en “El Reporte del Odio”, una coalición nacional de diversas organizaciones de noticias iniciada por la entidad de periodismo sin fines de lucro, ProPublica, con el fin de crear la base de datos más completa y confiable jamás recopilada en EE.UU. sobre delitos de odio e incidentes de prejuicio. Entre otros socios de la coalición hasta la fecha se incluyen The Google News Lab, New York Times Opinion Section, WNYC, The Root, Latino USA, First Draft, FUSION, Meedan, New America Media, Ushahidi, Buzzfeed News, The Advocate y la Facultad de Comunicación Social de la Universidad de Miami. La coalición también está trabajando con grupos de derechos civiles como Southern Poverty Law Center, The Human Rights Campaign y Anti-Defamation League. “El Reporte del Odio” recopilará un tesoro de datos provenientes de departamentos policiales y otras agencias del orden público, grupos comunitarios, organizaciones sin fines de lucro, reportajes de noticias, medios sociales, y también directamente de víctimas y testigos. Reporteros de ProPublica y una red de voluntarios, que incluye a estudiantes de periodismo de todo el país, autenticarán los reportes y luego los compartirán con socios mediáticos locales y otros grupos mediante una página web segura. “El Reporte del Odio” también tendrá como objetivo obtener información veraz sobre incidentes de acoso e intimidación – tanto en el mundo virtual como en el real – que pueden no alcanzar el nivel de delitos criminales y no están siendo documentados ni analizados por ninguna agencia gubernamental.

“La necesidad de tener datos reales nunca ha sido más aguda”, dijo Scott Klein, Subdirector Editorial de ProPublica. “Los expertos que han estudiado el odio por décadas nos dicen que han notado un pequeño aumento en los delitos de odio desde las elecciones presidenciales, y la poca información que existe confirma esa teoría. Pero ya que miles de departamentos de policía no reportan los delitos de odio, presuntos o confirmados, al gobierno federal, nos falta información fundamental acerca de cuántos de esos delitos ocurren en un año cualquiera, la naturaleza de los delitos e incidentes de prejuicio, y qué funciona para evitarlos. El proyecto ‘Reporte del Odio’ procura brindar apoyo a los ciudadanos y legisladores, proporcionándoles datos confiables para ayudarlos a entender el problema y para animar a los reporteros locales a que conviertan el tema en algo difícil de ignorar”.
La ley federal requiere que el FBI les pida estadísticas sobre delitos de odio a las agencias de orden público estatales y locales. Sin embargo, miles de esas agencias locales no cumplen con las solicitudes. Como resultado, aunque el FBI registra entre 5 y 10 mil delitos de odio al año, una encuesta anual realizada por la Oficina de Estadísticas del Departamento de Justicia (Bureau of Justice Statistics) estima que podrían llegar a 250,000.
Para la recopilación colectiva de estadísticas sobre delitos de odio, “El Reporte del Odio” empleará técnicas desarrolladas para el proyecto colaborativo de ProPublica del año pasado, Electionland, del cual Univision Noticias también formó parte como socio mediático.
