Catholic Charities of San Antonio, the Archdiocese of San Antonio’s charitable agency, will be honored for its community service by the San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists on Aug. 3 at the Grand Hyatt in downtown San Antonio.
Catholic Charities was selected for its role last summer in helping reunite Central American migrant parents with their children, who had been separated from them at the U.S.-Mexico border under Trump administration policy.
The journalism group’s 21st annual gala will feature two other honorees. Univision reporter Antonio Guillen will receive the Henry Guerra Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Journalism. New York-based journalist Maria Hinojosa will receive the group’s Corazón de Oro Award, given to an individual, group or institution whose work has been nationally recognized for excellence in their own fields and has shown a commitment to telling the story of Latinos in Texas and the United States.
Guillen is a five-time Emmy winner who has covered politics and crime for KWEX-TV, the local Univision affiliate.
Hinojosa is the anchor and executive producer of the long-running “Latino USA” show distributed by National Public Radio and carried in San Antonio by Texas Public Radio.
SAAHJ’s gala raises money for scholarships for Bexar County students pursuing careers in journalism, filmmaking and other media fields.
