The internationally renowned World Press Photo Foundation recognized Univision’s The Legacy of the Zero Tolerance Policy: Traumatized Children With No Access to Treatment as the best online video in its 2019 Digital Storytelling Contest
MIAMI – APRIL 12, 2019 – Univision News is proud to announce that its Digital News team has been honored with the 2019 World Press Photo Online Video of the Year award for its original short-form production titled “The Legacy of the Zero Tolerance Policy: Traumatized Children With No Access to Treatment,” which premiered in UnivisionNoticias.com in October 2018. Held annually by the World Press Photo Foundation, the prestigious World Press Photo Contest and Digital Storytelling Contest recognize excellence in international visual journalism, exposing the work of professional photographers and videographers to a global audience.
“The Legacy of the Zero Tolerance Policy: Traumatized Children With No Access to Treatment” highlights the real-life consequences of the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy by telling the story of Adayanci Perez, a six-year-old girl who was separated from her parents at the US-Mexico border. When she was finally allowed to return to her family in Guatemala three and a half months later, Adayanci was diagnosed with acute trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder.
The 9-minute video was developed and produced by the following Univision News Digital team: Almudena Toral, Director, cinematographer and editor; Lorena Arroyo, reporter and producer; Cindy Karp, reporter and producer; Andrea Patiño Contreras, co-editor; and Mauricio Rodríguez Pons, graphics.

In the past few years, Univision News Digital has received dozens of important national and international journalism prizes, including the Edward R. The Online Video of the Year category celebrates a video produced for the web that tells a compelling story through skillful editing and audiovisual design.

MIAMI – 12 DE ABRIL DE 2019 – Univision Noticias se enorgullece de anunciar que su equipo de noticias digitales ha sido honrado con el premio World Press Photo 2019 en la categoría de Video en Línea del Año (World Press Photo Online Video of the Year) por su producción original de formato corto titulada “El legado de la política de tolerancia cero: Niños traumatizados y sin tratamiento”, la cual debutó en UnivisionNoticias.com en octubre de 2018. Realizadas anualmente por la Fundación World Press Photo, los prestigiosos concursos de fotografía (World Press Photo Contest)y narración digital (World Press Digital Storytelling Contest) reconocen la excelencia en el periodismo visual internacional y exponen el trabajo de fotógrafos y videógrafos profesionales a un público global.
“El legado de la política de tolerancia cero: Niños traumatizados y sin tratamiento”destaca las consecuencias reales de la política migratoria llamada “tolerancia cero” de la administración Trump al relatar la historia de Adayanci Pérez, una niña de seis años que fue separada de sus padres en la frontera EEUU-México. Cuando al fin se le permitió reencontrarse con su familia en Guatemala tres meses y medio después, Adayanci fue diagnosticada con trauma agudo y trastorno por estrés postraumático.
El video de 9 minutos de duración fue desarrollado y producido por el siguiente equipo de Univision Noticias Digital: Almudena Toral, directora, cinematógrafa y editora; Lorena Arroyo, reportera y productora; Cindy Karp, reportera y productora; Andrea Patiño Contreras, coeditora; y Mauricio Rodríguez Pons, gráficos.
