Univision News gathered data from official and independent sources in 18 Latin American countries on the incidence of femicide in 2016. In cases where information was not available for that year, Univision News used the most recent obtainable data.
Published as part of Univision News’ International Women’s Day 2017 reporting, the special feature includes in-depth stories about gender-based violence in three specific countries, the personal testimonies of two survivors of attempted femicides and the mother of one who died, and an interactive portion providing data from all 18 countries. According to the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), there are 12 femicides a day in Latin America, making it one of the regions with the highest number of gender-based murders in the world. These statistics exclude Brazil, which has one of the worst records of gender-related violence, due to unobtainable data for that country. Additionally, women all over the region are the victims of violent men who attack them simply for being women, committing a variety of crimes against them that include rape, beatings, acid burning, among other types of abuse.

Según la Comisión Económica Para América Latina y el Caribe (Cepal), se producen 12 feminicidios al día en América Latina, colocando a la región entre las que más asesinatos de género registran en el mundo. Y esa estadística no incluye a Brasil, que tiene una de las más altas tasas de violencia de género, porque no hay datos disponibles de ese país. Adicionalmente, una gran cantidad de mujeres en toda la región son víctimas de hombres violentos que las atacan simplemente por ser mujeres, cometiendo contra ellas una serie de crímenes que incluyen violación, golpizas, quemaduras con ácido y otros tipos de abuso.
