Star-studded awards show to be broadcast live on Sunday, December 18, at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT (7:00 p.m. Central) on the Univision Network and UDN, following special red-carpet edition of “Sal y Pimienta” at 7:00 p.m. ET/PT (6:00 p.m. Central)
Nominees in 20 categories include soccer superstars Giovani dos Santos, Javier “Chicharito” Hernández, Lionel Messi; welterweight boxing champion Manny Pacquiao; and Olympic medalists Mónica Puig, Caterine Ibargüen and Laurie Hernández
MIAMI, FL – DECEMBER 1, 2016 – Univision Deportes, the multimedia sports division of Univision Communications Inc. (UCI) that also includes UDN, the No. 1 Spanish-language sports network, announced the third edition of Premios Univision Deportes (Univision Sports Awards), featuring today’s stars, most promising up-and-comers, retiring legends and Olympic heroes among the nominees. Since its launch in 2014, Premios Univision Deportes has become the premier sports award show for fanáticos, honoring top athletes and teams from the leagues and sports that Hispanics care about most. The two-hour presentation will honor sports figures for their accomplishments on and off the field of play, and across soccer, basketball, baseball, football, boxing, auto racing, extreme sports, tennis and gymnastics, among other sports. Fans are invited to view the awards celebration on the Univision Network on Sunday, December 18, 2016 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT (7:00 p.m. Central) and simulcast on UDN (Univision Deportes Network) as well as on the Univision Deportes app and Univision NOW. The show will include musical performances by top Latin artists who will be announced at a later date. Awards will be presented by top personalities from both Univision and the world of sports.
A special red-carpet edition of Univision Network’s hit Sunday entertainment magazine “Sal y Pimienta” (Salt and Pepper) will air on Univision and UDN at 7:00 p.m. ET/PT (6:00 p.m. Central).
More than 50 athletes and teams have been nominated across 20 categories. Nominees include Argentine soccer icon Lionel Messi, LA Galaxy and Mexican national team forward Giovani dos Santos, his Tri teammate and Bayern Leverkusen striker Javier “Chicharito” Hernández, Mexican boxer Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez and Chile’s National Soccer team.
Standout performers from the Rio Olympics who are nominated include Puerto Rican tennis star Mónica Puig, who became a national hero after bringing home the island’s first-ever Olympic gold. Her competition for the Female Athlete of the Year award includes Colombian gold-medal-winning triple jumper Caterine Ibargüen, 16-year-old Team USA gymnast Laurie Hernández and Venezuelan U17 soccer star Deyna Castellanos.
The field of boxing nominees includes Filipino legend Manny Pacquiao, who is up for “Comeback of the Year.” The NBA is represented on the list of nominees by Lebron James and Stephen Curry.
Other teams up for awards include the Venezuelan U17 women’s soccer team, the Cleveland Cavaliers and pro football’s Denver Broncos.
Two teams are up for awards after having broken championship droughts of more than a century: Leicester City was crowned Premier League champion after 132 years, and the Chicago Cubs are nominated for Team of the Year after they came back from a 3-1 deficit to win the MLB World Series for the first time since 1908.
Awards will be presented to 20 winners for their passion, athletic excellence and their use of sports as an agent for social change. Categories and special recognition awards are:

Los candidatos incluyen al idolatrado futbolista argentino Lionel Messi, el delantero de LA Galaxy y la Selección Nacional Mexicana Giovani dos Santos, su compañero del Tri y delantero de Bayern Leverkusen Javier “Chicharito” Hernández, el boxeador mexicano Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez y la Selección Nacional de Fútbol de Chile.
Las estrellas femeninas del deporte, como la atleta olímpica Monica Puig, Puertorriqueña que se convirtió en heroína nacional después de ganar la primera medalla de oro en la historia de su país. Caterine Ibargüen, la colombiana que ganó la medalla de oro en salto triple; Laurie Hernández, la gimnasta de 16 años del equipo de los Estados Unidos, y Deyna Castellanos, futbolista venezolana y estrella del seleccionado Sub-17, son algunas de las mujeres que también serán galardonas durante esta noche dedicada al deporte.
Entre los nominados del boxeo está el legendario filipino Manny Pacquiao, quien compite por el premio a la Sorpresa Deportiva del Año. Representan a la NBA en la lista de candidatos Lebron James y Stephen Curry.
Otros equipos que podrían recibir premios incluyen al equipo Sub-17 de fútbol femenino de Venezuela, los Cleveland Cavaliers y los Denver Broncos del fútbol americano profesional.
