The most powerful sports stories are often the ones that take place away from the field of play.
That’s the creative force behind “Expediente Univision Deportes” (“The Univision Sports Files”), which launched in 2014 on UDN. Expediente is a breakthrough series that tells the behind-the-scenes stories of Hispanic America’s favorite sports personalities, teams, and moments.
Airing monthly, Expediente provided viewers with well-crafted, compelling storytelling they couldn’t find anywhere else throughout 2015. Top stories included:
- A look at Julio Cesar Chavez’ biggest fight, as the legendary Mexican boxer overcame substance addiction and returned to the ring. His comeback was more than inspirational; he also opened a rehab center in Tijuana to help other addicts.
- A reunion of two friends, soccer legend Hristo Stoitchkov (now a Univision Deportes broadcaster) and Chelsea’s controversial manager José Mourinho. The two shared memories from their time together at Barcelona, and Mourinho discussed his thoughts about Europe’s leagues, Mexican soccer, MLS, and everything else.
Among the other sports personalities showcased in Expediente were notorious Uruguyan striker Luis Suarez, colorful former Mexico manager Miguel Herrera, star boxers Canelo Alvarez and Miguel Cotto, fitness diva Michelle Lewin, the 2005 Mexican Under-17 World Cup champions, and many others.
Twelve more episodes are in the production phase for 2016, with several episodes to feature the best stories around the highly-anticipated Copa America Centenario. Founding partners Ford, MillerCoors, and Verizon will be back for the upcoming season.
