L.A. Area Chamber And Univision Team Up To Help Thousands Of First-Generation Students Plan For College

LOS ANGELES, CA — L.A. Cash for College, in partnership with the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, UNITE-LA and Univision Communications Inc., is partnering to provide college preparation, financial aid assistance, career exploration and scholarship opportunities to approximately 10,000 students at Tu Futuro L.A.: Beyond the Diploma, a college and career event at East Los Angeles College Oct. 19.

Previously, both the L.A. Area Chamber and Univision hosted separate events (formerly known as L.A. Cash for College Convention and Feria de Educacion, respectively) to assist students with college preparation and financial aid resources. The partnership brings a new level of excitement and motivation to ensure more students and families consider their post-secondary options.

“Our mission to inform and empower Latinos in the Los Angeles area through access to education has been the driving force behind our educational platform and why we are proud to partner with the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce and UNITE-LA on this event,” said Luis Patiño, President and General Manager, Univision Los Angeles. “By empowering Latino youth with the resources and tools needed to pursue higher education, we will help generations of our community rise and succeed.”

The event provides local, college-bound students (whose schools have limited access to counselors and college resources due to budget constraints) with the latest information on how to maximize their financial aid for college. It features financial aid, college and career preparation workshops, with experts from local colleges, providing an inside look at how to pay for school and giving students an edge in completing the FAFSA, California Dream Act, and Chafee Grant applications.

“The L.A. Chamber and UNITE-LA have helped over 289,000 students over the last 18 years access financial aid information. We have served students, particularly those of low-income and first generation, achieve their dream of going to college,” said L.A. Area Chamber President and CEO, Maria S. Salinas. “With partners like Univision, our reach is broadened resulting in greater impact. Opening the doors to higher education opportunities is essential in creating the workforce of the future.”

Salinas and Patiño, along with other business, civic and elected leaders will conclude the program, awarding $20,000 in scholarships: $10,000 will be awarded to randomly selected students, who must be present to win and an additional $10,000 will be awarded to students who have been pre-selected.

Tu Futuro L.A.: Beyond the Diploma is sponsored and supported by the City of Los Angeles, the Office of L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti, The Kresge Foundation, Wells Fargo, California Student Aid Commission, Bank of America, CalStateTEACH, Universal Technical Institute, Ralphs, L.A. Care Health Plan, Valero Energy Corporation and the Pasadena Tournament of Roses.

Tu Futuro L.A.: Beyond the Diploma is part of the Chamber’s and its affiliate, UNITE-LA’s, body of work, College Ready L.A., which ensures collaboration in assisting all L.A. area students to be prepared, be able to access and be able to complete college.
